Jane Austen Sequels- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Tag: Books & MagazinesJanice @ 9:38 pm

With the ever increasing popularity of Jane Austen’s classic novels over the last few years, there have been an increasing number of published sequels written recently. Many Austen enthusiasts are asking if they are good reads, or simply a let down after reading the originals.

Well, I guess that would depend on your own personal likes and dislikes in literature. Let me point out that Jane Austen’s work is classic for a reason, she has written some of the greatest love stories of all time, which have been loved by generation after generation. That is a pretty tough act to follow, but indeed some of the sequels are well worth your time. Some are great, well written and engaging. Some, while good are not anything special, but rather, light and fluffy romps through Regency England. Some are downright ugly by comparison.

What constitutes ugly depends on your own perspective. You will find some Regency Jane Austen sequels, which are similar to the original in both style and content, and pleasing to most Austen fans. You will also find many modern adaptations and sequels that purists will not be as apt to enjoy. Similarly, you will find the classic Austen heroes and heroines in many different genera of literature. For some, this is a bit too much of a stretch. Zombies, time bending and time travel, overt language and sexuality? Really, it is all too much for some, while for others the updated versions are just the thing.

Truth be told, there is something for everyone in the world of Jane Austen sequels. The trick is knowing what you do like and do not like in your literature. If you know a particular theme, plot or genera is offensive to you, then it is best to avoid it all together. If there is a particular aspect of the original story that intrigues, look there as a good place to begin your exploration into the world of JA sequels while avoiding the rest of the offerings for the time being.

Are you looking for an ideal Christmas present for your beloved children or a dear friend? If so, then an interesting Christmas book would be a great option to consider. Books have always been excellent gifts, no matter what the occasion is. They are not only the perfect choice when giving gifts to book-lovers but also to those who appreciate stories centering on the Christmas celebration. In fact, books are the top choice among parents who want to reward their children for being good the whole year. In particular, many prefer picture books than those that only have text in them. Pictured books can spark the interest of kids since they have beautiful graphics to accompany the text. Furthermore, they are more pleasing to look at as compared to those that only have pure text.

If you are looking for a great book to give your kids on Christmas, here are some good recommendations that you need to look into:

  • The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus – If you will be giving the book to your nieces, nephews, or kids that are avid fans of Santa Claus, then this book is certainly the perfect for them. Written by L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz series, and illustrated by Charles Santore, a world-renowned and award-wining artist and illustrator, the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is a book that will be loved by both kids and adults. It is highly recommended for kids ages 5 -11. This book tells the enchanting tale of a human baby that was raised by a wood nymph, which later on becomes Santa Claus. The book offers a number of double page spreads, and great illustrations that vividly describe each scene in the story. Both the writer and illustrator did a great job in producing this mesmerizing book.
  • The Scallop Christmas – This fascinating book, which is written by Jane Freeberg, narrates a story about a very special gift, which is the gift of love. The whole story was narrated by a grandmother who looks back on some of her most precious childhood memories.  The story has a good moral lesson, and the creative water-colored pictures by Astrid Sheckels, the book’s illustrator, added more depth and strong sense of the story.

As with the many Christmas greeting cards available in the market, there are also plenty of amusing, engrossing, and engaging Xmas books that you can use a gift for your kids this coming holiday season.
